Thirty-Six Block Box

Thirty-six solid birch blocks — cubes, half-cubes, arches, pillars and two long planks — in a lidded alder crate that doubles as the storage. The edges are chamfered so a tower does not bite when it falls on a foot.

Care, repair and the long view

A scratched block is a ten-minute job, not a bin job

Rub the mark out with the pad in the crate, wipe a little of the tin over it, leave it an hour. The colour comes back darker than new and then settles. Never put blocks in a dishwasher — birch will raise its grain and stay rough.

If a block splits along the grain, send a photo and we will post a replacement free for as long as the Block Box is on the shelf. We have been making it since 2017 and have replaced forty-one blocks in that time.

About this crate

What people ask before they reserve one

Is thirty-six enough blocks?

For one child, yes — thirty-six builds a tower taller than a three-year-old and still leaves arches over. For two children building together, most people add the Town Block Tub after a few months. The crate has room for both sets.

Do the blocks fit other block sets?

The 50 mm cube is the common unit across most unit-block sets, so they stack cleanly with anything built on the same module. Our arches are cut on a 100 mm radius, which is two cubes wide, so they bridge any two-cube gap.

Which finish should I pick?

Oiled, unless you want to do it yourself. Natural is four euros less and arrives bare — fine if you would rather choose your own finish, rough on the hands if you do not. Smoked alder is a dark brown that goes almost chocolate over a year; it takes two extra weeks because the ammonia tent runs once a fortnight.

Can a younger child have it?

Nothing here can be swallowed — the smallest piece is 50 mm. The age band is three because the 300 mm planks weigh 180 g each and a toddler dropping one on a bare foot will cry. Under two, the Pull-Along Peg Cart or the Rolling Tipper is the better parcel.

What happens after I press reserve?

A crate is held in your name for five days and one of us emails you a payment link and a posting date, usually within one working day. Nothing is charged on this page and nothing is charged until you follow that link.
